Introduction

Instagram or TikTok - that’s the question! The two social media giants have made the lives of marketers and business owners challenging. Which social media platform should they market on? Should they use both platforms? If you are stuck in the TikTok Vs. Instagram dilemma, you have landed just on the right page. Let’s try solving the problem, shall we?

Use

TikTok is essentially a video platform that also functions as a social network. It allows users to create videos of up to 60 seconds by editing the videos on the app itself. Instagram, however, is foremost a social media platform to share pictures. The increasing competition in video marketing has pushed Instagram to introduce features like IGTV and Reels.

Audience

The primary Instagram users are between the ages of 18 and 34. TikTok has users mostly under 18 years of age. When it comes to gender, the male demographic dominates TikTok while Instagram is dominated by the female demographic.

Popularity

When it comes to popularity, TikTok beats Instagram hands down. Instagram had its peak back in 2018 when it hit the 1 billion MAU mark. Since then, the app’s engagement has dropped from 5 percent to 3.4 percent per quarter. TikTok, however, reached the 1 billion users mark in just two years of its launch! It is one of the world’s most downloaded apps and is undoubtedly going to outstrip Instagram.

Features

TikTok users have a wide selection of music to add to their videos. On the other hand, Instagram doesn’t allow users with business accounts to access the music library. Business accounts on Instagram cannot use the music feature on Reels due to copyright infringement. Thus, they have to create their Reels outside of the app and then upload them on Instagram. The latest ‘Remix’ feature on Instagram has well-matched with the ‘Duet’ feature on TikTok. However, TikTok still is more creator-friendly as it boasts more features, effects, and editing capabilities than Instagram.

Algorithm

TikTok’s algorithm is more advanced than that of Instagram. Although both have the feature to explore new content (‘For You’ on TikTok and ‘Discover’ page on Instagram), TikTok doubles down on user’s interests and keeps the users scrolling. This keeps the content-consuming experience on TikTok quite engaging.

Paid advertising

Instagram is a clear winner here, and all credit goes to its experience. It is more established, has been around longer than TikTok, and has a more robust paid advertising platform.
